I think that trial and error is a good way of learning. Light boxes are great and also shiny acrylic backgrounds. You can also use software like photoshop to amend small mistakes in pictures, change the exposure etc... I try to use natural light and use similar backgrounds for most of my pictures. I used to use all sorts of backgrounds, but I realized it made all my pics look CRAZY.
